What Using Too Much Detergent Does to a Washing Machine

It’s an educated guess, but you are probably using too much detergent in your washing machine. It’s true, there might be some who think that more detergent equals cleaner clothing, but usually it is more of an issue of detergent manufacturers telling you to use more than you need. Obviously, if you use more, you need to buy it more often.

Regardless of why you are using too much detergent, you should really consider cutting the amount down. Detergent in a washing machine hangs around far longer than you might expect. If you have a serious problem with mold and mildew growing inside your washing machine, it could actually be a detergent issue. Using too much detergent attracts this kind of growth. Furthermore, if you regularly use too much detergent, it can build up in hoses and water sensors. There may come a day when your washing machine won’t drain because there is a clog somewhere in the system. A combination of not only lint but detergent that has thickened into a gel is responsible.

The amount of laundry detergent you should use to not cause problems further down the line with your machine varies. For standard detergent, usually, about half the amount they recommend is enough. However, when it comes to high-efficiency detergent, usually you will want to use what they recommend, but only if you are using a high-efficiency washer. You may also want to run an empty load on the longest, hottest setting every now and then just to sort of rinse your washer out to prevent excess detergent build-up. A little maintenance can really help you save on future repairs as well as help you keep your washer smelling fresh. It doesn’t really affect your clothing too much, but it isn’t a smell you want filling your laundry room.
