Do you sometimes feel like everyone in the Twin Cities is ice fishing except you? Here’s your chance to get in on the fun at Take a Kid Ice Fishing on January 19, 2019 at Pickerel Lake in St. Paul.
Just come down to Pickerel Lake in Lilydale Regional Park from 1 to 3 pm on January 19. You’ll be meeting Ranger Gordon and friends at 561 West Water Street. This is a free event sponsored by the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. No fishing license is necessary for this day as long as you’re bringing at least one child age 15 or younger with you. Your generous sponsor is even providing the bait, equipment, and instructions. You can drill your own hole or they’re happy to do it for you. When you’re ready to take a break from fishing, you and your kids can visit a nearby shelter with an underwater camera so you can see what goes on below the ice.
It’s important to keep safety in mind when ice fishing. In general, ice should be at least 4 inches thick if you’re going to stand or skate on the surface, and much thicker if it needs to support a vehicle. The rangers will be keeping an eye on the conditions so check the website for updates in case the day needs to be rescheduled due to warm weather or other factors.
You’re guaranteed to be in good company for this event, but remember to always bring a companion because it’s dangerous to go ice fishing alone, even if you’re experienced. Appropriate footwear is also a must, like ice fishing boots or similar styles with good traction.Ice fishing is one of the pleasures of living in the Minneapolis area.
