Minnesota may be the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but the hiking trails are not far behind. The Twin Cities has a plethora of trails, in and around itself, allowing you to submerge in the fresh air, blue skies, and greenery without having to go too far. Here are just a few to get you started.
This State Park is nestled along the banks of the St. Croix River in Hastings. Its combination of deep ravines and high bluffs leading to multiple scenic overlooks is a hiker’s dream. With over 20 miles of hiking trails, this park has ample areas of exploration. Prairie and Deer Valley Loop are two of the more popular trails amongst hikers, and the picturesque swimming beach is an excellent spot to cool off or take a break.
141 acres of beautiful Sugar Maple big woods forest is right in Wayzata and awaiting your undertaking. This forest is approximately 700 years old with trees as old as 350 years. Maintained trails are prevalent thought this SNA. Wildflowers abound in springtime leading to an enclosed canopy of 90 ft tall trees throughout the forest in the summertime. A swamp, sedge meadow, and pond are also found as remnants from the glacial era.
Eagan is where you will find the largest park in the Dakota County parks system at approximately 2000 acres. Surrounded by cities, it is a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This park is a forest dotted with a multitude of lakes, beaches, and boardwalks. Boasting over 20 miles of trails, it’s easy to forget you are in the middle of a metropolis.
On the west bank of the Mississippi River in South Minneapolis, this is a refreshing slice of nature to delve into when you need a break from the city. Scenic bluffs, stretches of sandy beaches, and oak savanna makes this a stunning hike. At 5 miles round trip, this is a shorter hike on the list but no less spectacular.
