What You Need to Know About Whirlpool’s Glass Cooktop Recall

It was announced that Whirlpool was recalling a wide range of glass cooktops that are sold not only under their Whirlpool brand, but under their owned brands of KitchenAid and JennAir as well. These glass cooktops that use radiant or radiant downdraft heating feature touch controls that have a chance to activate on their own.

According to the 133 reports that caused the recall, the touch controls on the glass cooktops have a chance to turn on without human touch. This has resulted in several small fires that caused property damage and two cases of minor burns by owners.

How to Tell If Your Glass Cooktop is Affected?

If you have purchased a glass cooktop at any home improvement store from March 2017 to August 2019 with touch controls, you should be suspicious. The recall covers a wide array of model numbers that are not only under the Whirlpool brand but under the KitchenAid and JennAir brands as well.

While the majority sold were done so in the United States, the recall area extends into Canada and Mexico as well.

While they have published a long list of affected model numbers, the most conclusive way to find out if your glass cooktop is affected is to go to Whirlpool’s website and look up your model number.

What to Do If Your Stove is Recalled?

If your cooktop was one of the recalled models, you will want to schedule a free replacement and installation with Whirlpool. While waiting for service, they recommend that the stove is disconnected from the power while not being used and any flammable objects are kept away from it while connected to the power.

Unfortunately, this isn’t an issue that can be repaired, only replaced. This means you need to get in contact with Whirlpool to see that the issue is safely rectified.
