Reasons a Gas Burner Isn’t Igniting

There are a lot of advantages to owning a gas oven and stove. There is virtually no warm up time on the stove and you can even cook on the stove top if the power is out. Unfortunately, if your gas oven stovetop is not igniting, then that is a big problem. You can still light it with a match in most cases, but you kind of want it to work right. However, this can be caused by different reasons, some being easier to fix than others.

Clogged Burners

Ask any service person, and they will tell you that a number of cases of burners not igniting have been caused by a problem they didn’t need to fix – the burner was clogged. Often when people clean a gas stove, they clean around the burners and this actually pushes food particles into the burner holes. This can prevent the gas from getting to the igniter or getting out at all. Before calling a repair service, be sure to check to see that the burner isn’t clogged.

Loose Igniter Connection

After being bumped around by pots, pans, and people, the wires that connect the igniter and the control panel can become loose. When this happens, you won’t get the spark needed to actually ignite the gas, so the burners will cease to work. In this instance, you may not always hear the click of the igniter, typically indicating that something is loose.

Bad Igniter

If you fail to hear the click of the igniter at all, it has likely gone faulty. However, if the igniter is showing yellow or orange instead of the blue that it should be, then it is likely faulty as well and will probably soon go out completely. Igniters are not terribly difficult to replace, but because you are dealing with a gas stove, many homeowners might feel more comfortable finding a repair service rather than trying to do it themselves.
