The Filter Is New, So Why Is the Light Still On?
You bought the right filter, twisted it in, and the little “Replace Filter” light is still glowing. It is one of the most common refrigerator annoyances we hear about, and the fix is usually quick once you know your panel.
Here is the key thing to understand: on most Whirlpool and Maytag refrigerators, swapping in a new filter does not reset the indicator on its own. The fridge tracks filter life by time and by how much water has run through it, usually around six months or roughly 200 gallons. When it hits that mark, the light comes on, and you have to tell the refrigerator that a fresh filter is in. Until you do, the reminder keeps showing even with a brand new cartridge.
This guide walks through the actual reset methods by control type. Because Whirlpool and Maytag share the same parent engineering, the steps below apply across both brands, plus Amana and KitchenAid.
First, Read the Light’s Color
Before you reset anything, check what the indicator is telling you.
- Blue or green means the filter is working and nothing needs to be done.
- Orange or yellow means it is time to reset after a change, or time to replace the filter.
- Red or flashing means the filter is past its rated life.
If your light went orange right after you installed a new filter, that is normal. It simply needs a reset.
How to Reset the Filter Light by Control Type
The exact button varies by model, so your owner’s manual is always the final word. That said, almost every Whirlpool or Maytag refrigerator falls into one of these four groups.
1. Models with a dedicated filter button
Look for a button labeled “Filter,” “Water Filter,” “Filter Reset,” or “Reset Filter,” usually on the dispenser panel or just below the status light. Press and hold it for about three seconds until the light flashes, turns off, or you hear a beep or chirp. Release once you get that response.
2. Side-by-side models with button combinations
Many side-by-side units do not have a single filter button. Instead, after changing the filter, hold two buttons together for three seconds. The most common pairs are “Light” and “Ice Type,” or “Max Cool” and “Max Ice.” The display will usually count down and play a tone when the reset takes.
3. Models with an Options menu
If your panel has an “Options” button, press it to enter Options mode, press “Lock” to start the reset, then press “Measured Fill” to confirm. When it works, the “Order” and “Replace” icons disappear from the screen.
4. French door models with an interior panel
On many French door refrigerators, the reset button lives on a control panel attached to the inside ceiling of the fresh food section. Open the doors, find the button beneath the status light, and hold it about three seconds until the indicator returns to blue.
If the Light Still Will Not Reset
When the steps above do not work, the problem usually is not the reset itself.
- The filter is not fully seated. This is the number one cause. Remove the filter and reinstall it with a firm push and twist, or until you hear it click, depending on your model. Then run the reset again.
- The filter is not compatible. An off-brand cartridge can fail to register with the fridge. A genuine Whirlpool or Maytag filter made for your model is the safest bet.
- The panel is unresponsive. As a last resort, cutting power to the refrigerator for a few minutes can reset the control board. Restore power, then try the reset one more time.
One helpful note while you sort this out: if you cannot replace a clogged filter right away, you can run the system in bypass mode by removing the filter entirely. The water will not be filtered, but you will keep normal flow to the dispenser and ice maker.
When It Is More Than a Stubborn Light
A filter reminder that will not clear is sometimes a symptom of something larger, especially if you also notice slow water flow, weak ice production, a leak, or a control panel that does not respond at all. Those point toward a clogged line, a dispenser switch problem, or a control board issue, none of which a reset will fix.

Quick Recap
- A new filter does not reset the light on its own.
- Blue or green is good. Orange means reset or replace.
- Use the reset method that matches your panel: a dedicated button, a two-button combo, the Options menu, or the interior French door panel.
- If it will not clear, reseat the filter, confirm it is genuine, then power cycle as a last resort.
- Slow water, weak ice, or leaks alongside the light mean it is time for service.
A filter light is the fridge doing its job and reminding you. Once you know your panel, clearing it takes seconds. And if the light is hiding a bigger water or ice problem, Twin Cities Appliance is ready to help.
