Due to the severe nature of many product recalls, it is important that consumers stay up-to-date on which home appliances are currently under recall so that they can have them repaired or replaced as necessary, as abiding by recall notices is vital in ensuring a household’s safety. However, one handy appliance homeowners do not think to look out for recall notices for is garbage disposals, as garbage disposals are rarely recalled (only two garbage disposal recalls have been placed in recent years). However, earlier this year the major garbage disposal distributor InSinkErator recalled its SinkTop switch accessory for garbage disposals due to fire hazard. If you have an InSinkErator SinkTop switch accessory in your home, here is what you need to know about this recall.
The Product
On March 6th, 2018, InSinkErator recalled nearly 1.5 million units of its single outlet SinkTop switches sold in the United States. This product is an air activated switch that mounts to the sink or countertop as an alternative to traditional wall switches for garbage disposals. These switches were sold between 2005 and 2017 at home improvement stores, online websites, and through plumbing contractors. These switches cost between $50 and $90. The model numbers affected are 76703, STS-SOSN, 7251, and 74300, and the model number can be found on the back of the power module.
The Recall
These popular garbage disposal switches have been recalled by InSinkErator due to the fact that water can get into the power module, posing a fire hazard. So far, InSinkErator has received 40 reports of water causing overheating and damage to both the power module and the outlet beneath the sink. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time.
What Happens Next
If you have one of these sink top garbage disposal switches in your home, you may be wondering what your next course of action should be. The most important thing for you to do is immediately stop using your garbage disposal until the problem is addressed. You will then want to contact InSinkErator directly, as they are providing free replacements to all affected customers (additional recall information can be found here).
