Malfunctioning heating elements
One possible cause of a Maytag oven not heating properly is a problem with the heating elements. Ovens have two elements—the broil element at the top and the bake element at the bottom. If one or both of the elements are not functioning properly, your oven will struggle to reach the correct temperature or may even fail to heat at all. If this is your issue, you may have noticed uneven heating or browning when cooking. Here’s what to do:
- Disconnect your oven from the power by flipping the corresponding circuit breaker to the “off” position.
- Check the heating elements for any obvious damage. A damaged heating element may have scorch marks or cracks.
- If you’re confident using a multimeter, test the elements for continuity. They should read between 19 and 115 ohms, but check your Maytag manual for your model’s specifications.
- If the multimeter indicates the elements are faulty, they will need to be replaced. You can either call in a professional or order replacement parts and install them yourself.
Poor door seal
A good door seal is essential for an effective oven. It stops the hot air from escaping, allowing the oven’s interior to reach the proper temperature quickly and efficiently. If the seal is faulty, heat will escape as quickly as it is generating, leading to poor cooling and forcing your oven to work harder than it should.
If this is your problem, you may notice your oven eventually reaches the correct temperature, but it takes far longer to do so. You will also notice the area surrounding the oven becoming very hot.
- First, inspect the seal around the oven door for damage. It should be flexible and clean, without any cracks or tears. When the oven door is closed, you shouldn’t be able to see any gaps at all.
- If the seal appears to be dirty, thoroughly clean it with a mild detergent and a soft cloth, then test to see if the issue has improved.
- If the seal looks damaged, it will need to be replaced. Before ordering a replacement, make sure it is compatible with your Maytag oven model.
- Remove the faulty seal, then press the new seal into place, ensuring it is held tightly.
- Close the oven door and check for gaps. If the seal appears tight, try heating your Maytag oven to see if the heating problem has been fixed.
Faulty temperature sensor
Your Maytag oven relies on a temperature sensor to control the heating elements. The sensor detects the oven’s internal temperature and the control board adjusts the heating elements accordingly. If the temperature sensor is faulty, it may cause the heating elements to turn off prematurely, leading to an oven that doesn’t heat. To fix:
- Switch off the circuit breaker that corresponds to your oven.
- Find the temperature sensor. You can check your Maytag manual for help, but most models have the sensor located at the back of the interior.
- Use your multimeter to test the temperature sensor. At room temperature, you should be getting a reading close to 1000 ohms. If the reading is off, the sensor will need to be replaced.
- To replace the sensor, order a compatible part for your Maytag oven. Then, unscrew the faulty sensor, disconnect the wiring, and install the new sensor.
- Once the new sensor is installed, test your oven to see if the heating issue has been resolved.
Gas supply problems
If you have a gas oven, gas supply issues are often behind heating issues. If the gas is the problem, your burners will also be non-functional, so test these first. If the burners are still working, check out the next step in our guide! If no part of your oven is working, it’s likely to be due to an issue somewhere in the supply line. To check:
- Find out if there are issues with the gas supply to your home. If you have other appliances running on gas, check to see if they work. You can also contact your gas supplies to find out if there are any outages or issues in your area.
- Make sure the gas supply valve is fully open to allow for optimal gas flow.
- Check the gas supply line to see if it’s kinked.
- If there is no obvious cause for the gas issues, contact a professional technician to help you, as working with gas can be dangerous.
Ignitor problems
If your burners are functional, that rules out a gas supply issue, but you may have a problem with your oven’s igniter. The ignitor uses a spark to ignite the gas, allowing your oven to ignite and produce heat. To check:
- Try turning on your oven and observe the igniter. If it doesn’t flow, it’s likely faulty.
- To test the igniter, disconnect the oven from its power source and then use a multimeter to test if it has continuity.
- If the ignitor is faulty, purchase a compatible replacement, then unscrew the faulty ignitor and disconnect the wiring. Put the new one in its place, referring to your Maytag manual if you’re unsure of the positioning.
- Once installed, restore power to your oven and test to see.
