A Frigidaire oven that isn’t heating up can be caused by a range of factors, including power supply issues, faulty thermostats, and broken heating elements. Pinpointing the exact cause of your oven’s heating issues may sound tricky, but with a few simple troubleshooting tricks, you can find the source of the problem. Read on to find out how.
This guide applies to all common models of Frigidaire electric ovens, including:

Check The Power Supply
First of all, we recommend checking your oven’s power supply. If this is interrupted, your oven won’t turn on or be able to heat your food. This issue is more likely if your oven is totally non-functional – if the display or the burners are working, it is unlikely to be a power issue.
To check this, first inspect the oven’s power cord and make sure it doesn’t appear damaged. If it does, you will need to purchase a replacement cord.
The next step should be to check that the circuit breaker is turned on. If your home experiences a power surge, the circuit breaker can get tripped, which prevents your oven from turning on.
- First, locate your home’s circuit board.
- Find the breaker that corresponds to your oven. In most cases, this will be labeled as ‘oven’.
- Ensure that the breaker is in the ‘on’ position. If it looks halfway between on and off, move it to the fully off position before switching it back to on.
- Check to see if your oven is now turning on and heating normally.
Check The Thermostat
A malfunctioning thermostat can cause oven heating issues. The thermostat sends signals to the control board to turn the heating element on or off to maintain the correct temperature. If something is wrong with the thermostat, it may not send the correct heating signals, leading to a cold oven.
To check this:
- Make sure your oven is off – flip the circuit breaker that controls it to the ‘off’ position.
- Access the thermostat. In most Frigidaire oven models, you’ll need to remove the back panel. Refer to your Frigidaire manual if you are having trouble.
- Remove the thermostat from the oven and test it with a multimeter. If it reads zero, then the thermostat is broken and needs to be replaced.
- Source a compatible replacement thermostat and install it in place of the faulty one.
- Put your oven back together and test to see if it is now heating properly.
Check The Temperature Sensor
The temperature sensor is a metal probe located inside your oven that detects the internal temperature and sends a message to the thermostat. If this sensor is dirty or faulty, it won’t be able to correctly sense the oven’s internal temperature.
- Disconnect your oven from the power.
- Locate the temperature sensor – it will be inside the oven, usually on the back wall. It looks like a thin metal rod.
- If the temperature sensor looks dirty, clean it with a soft cloth and a mild detergent solution. Be careful not to damage it.
- If it appears normal, test the sensor with a multimeter. It should read 1100 ohms at room temperature – if the reading is far from this, it may be faulty.
- If you find it’s faulty, purchase a compatible replacement sensor. Remove the faulty one and put the new one in its place.
- Restore power to your oven and test to see if it’s working properly.
Check The Heating Elements
Ovens have two heating elements – the bake element at the bottom and the broil element at the top. If either of these elements is malfunctioning, your oven won’t heat or will heat unevenly. If you’ve noticed your oven has been burning parts of your food while other parts are left uncooked, then the heating elements may be to blame.
- Turn your oven to the highest temperature, then check to see if the elements are glowing. If they’re not glowing or if they’re only glowing on one side, the element is faulty and needs to be replaced.
- You can also check either element with a multimeter to see if the elements are functioning. Turn off your oven, and ensure it is cool before you begin. Check your Frigidaire manual to find the expected resistance reading, then compare this to your multimeter reading. If it’s outside the expected range, the elements will need to be replaced.
- If they need replacing, source a replacement element or elements, then remove the faulty ones and put the functioning ones in their place.
Check The Control Board
If you still can’t find the source of the issue, you may have a problem with your control board. The control board is like the brain of your oven, and if it is malfunctioning, many oven processes may not work, including the heating. Note that replacing the control board involves some complex electrical work, so only attempt this repair if you are confident in what you’re doing. You may prefer to hire a professional technician at this point.
To replace the control board:
- Purchase a replacement control board, either from Frigidaire or from an appliance parts retailer.
- Disconnect your oven from the power and remove the rear panel.
- Take a picture of the wiring configuration before removing the faulty control board to ensure you can put the new one in correctly.
- Unplug all the wiring harnesses and remove the screws so you can remove the old control board.
- Put the new control board in its place and connect the wiring and screws, ensuring you refer to the photo you took as needed.
- Put the panels back together.
- Restore power to your oven and test to see if it’s functioning normally.
