If your dishwasher is full of dirty dishes, the lights are on, but nothing happens when you press Start, you’re not alone. Since the panel is active, the problem is usually not with the electricity. Most of the time, a small component is preventing the machine from starting its main wash cycle.

Modern dishwashers have safety checks and mechanical switches that must all be satisfied before a cycle begins. Below are the most common reasons a dishwasher won’t start and how to fix them.

1. The Door Latch is Not Working

The door latch is the most common reason a dishwasher refuses to start. The dishwasher must be fully locked for safety before it will allow the pump or heating element to turn on.

How the Door Latch Works

The latch contains a small internal switch. When you close the door, the latch presses the switch completely to signal the control board that the door is closed and it is safe to start.

Common Failures

  • The latch is sticky or worn out.
  • The plastic hook on the door is bent.
  • The switch inside the latch fails electrically.

When the latch fails, the dishwasher thinks the door is open and will not start, even though the lights are on.

What to Do

  • Open and firmly close the door until you hear a solid click.
  • If the dishwasher still won’t start, the latch switch may be broken and need replacement.

Fixing the door latch is often simple and inexpensive, and it is a good first step before calling a technician.

2. The Cycle Was Interrupted

Many modern dishwashers have memory features. If a cycle was stopped midway, or if the door was opened during a wash, the machine may get stuck in a pause or “memory hold” mode.

How the Pause Feature Works

The dishwasher’s computer remembers where it left off in the cycle. If the machine thinks it is paused or still running a previous cycle, it will not start a new wash until the memory is cleared.

Clearing the Cycle

  • Press and hold the Cancel/Drain button for a few seconds until the lights flash.
  • Wait one minute for the dishwasher to reset.
  • Press the Start button again.

This step clears the computer memory and drains any remaining water. It is often the simplest way to get the dishwasher running again.

3.  Delay Start Is Activated

One of the most common reasons a dishwasher has power but won’t start immediately is that the “Delay Start” feature has been turned on. This feature allows you to load the dishwasher now but have it run later (for example, in the middle of the night).

How to Tell:

  • Look for a “Delay” or “Hourglass” light on the display.
  • Check if there is a countdown timer showing a number (like “2” or “4”).
  • If Delay Start is active, the machine is simply waiting for the timer to run out before starting.

How to Fix:

  • Press the “Cancel/Drain” button to reset the control board.
  • Or, press the “Delay” button repeatedly until the hours selection goes back to zero or the light turns off.
  • Press “Start” again to begin the cycle immediately.

4. The Control Lock is On

Some dishwashers have a control lock feature to prevent children from accidentally starting the machine or changing settings. This safety feature will allow the panel lights to operate, but the dishwasher will ignore the Start button.

How the Lock Works

  • The panel may show a small lock icon or a key symbol when active.
  • The machine will not begin a cycle until the lock is turned off.

How to Turn It Off

  • Look for instructions on the inside edge of the door or near the control buttons.
  • Usually, pressing and holding a single button (such as Heat Dry or Normal Wash) for three to five seconds will deactivate the lock.
  • The lock icon should disappear, allowing the dishwasher to start normally.

Control lock issues are simple to fix and can save you from thinking the dishwasher has a bigger problem.

Other Tips for Diagnosing a Dishwasher That Won’t Start

Even if your dishwasher has power, a few less obvious issues can prevent it from starting:

  • Check for Water Supply Issues: Some dishwashers will refuse to start if they do not detect a proper water supply. Make sure the water valve under the sink is fully open.
  • Inspect the Float Switch: The float switch prevents overflow by detecting water in the tub. If it is stuck in the “up” position due to debris or hard water buildup, the machine may not start.
  • Panel or Wiring Problems: Loose or damaged wires to the control board can prevent the dishwasher from starting, even if lights are on. A technician can safely inspect and repair these issues.
  • Test the Start Button: Occasionally, the Start button itself can fail mechanically. Press it firmly or test for electrical continuity if you have a multimeter.

In Summary

A dishwasher with power that won’t start usually has a simple fix. The most common causes are the door latch, an interrupted cycle, Delay Start mode, or an activated control lock. Checking these components first often solves the problem without a service call.

Regular maintenance like cleaning the door latch, checking the water supply, and clearing the cycle memory can prevent these issues. If basic troubleshooting doesn’t work, a technician can safely diagnose electrical or control board problems.
